My girlfriend got the nickname back when she was in a college: MEOW.
She got it from talking to cats. She said that back in campus, she’ll be sitting close to cats and talk to them, her friends started calling her Meow. When I met her, her name was one of her more attention grabbing details besides her being a smartass back when we were training in my first job three years ago.
Anyway we became friends. I have called her Meow then until there came another Miao in the company, a gay guy. Minsan nagugulat ang mga tao pag narinig kami na:
Oo, naglasing kami nina Meow hanggang alas-diyes!
And people who overhear us and don’t know her would say:
Ano?! Nag-iinuman kayo ni Miao?!!!
I have nothing against the guy but I don’t want them to think we are friends since we’re not. I have this thing about association but that’s going off-topic. Well, I think the reaction is a bit intense since he is one of those really outspoken somewaht loud gay people. So I started calling Meow by her real first name.
When we left work and we started going out, I started calling her Meow again and we meow and woof at each other.
Now at my new job, there’s no Meow/Miao here but I have this gay co-worker who I think likes cats and keeps on meowing. He meows a lot in our work chatroom. Utang na loob! It’s driving me crazy sometimes, as much as I try to let it pass, pero tama na! Oh, please! PLEASE! Tama na…
I wonder what it is with gay people and cats. Maybe because Catwoman has been like a gay icon or something. I am not sure, maybe it has something to do with how cats are so sanguine that seems to be a great fascination to some people that some wish to emulate.
I am thinkingof giving her a different cat name but there’s already a Kitty that I know and I know it won’t suit her and the other names I think ends up sounding sappy or like some poor taste name you hear/read in porn. I will just stick to Meow then.
