KJ

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

I did not attend our teambuilding. It’s supposed to be today. Finally, some time by myself. My Team Leader was making me feel guilty about not going because there’s only one confirmed person in our team going, but I can’t. I mean I was among the people who made it pretty clear, right from the onset, that I was not going. So dapat yung mga tao na nag-back out ang dapat ma-guilty.

Besides, masyado na akong matanda para maging biktima ng peer pressure.

I also bought two books. One is A Scanner Darkly, written by Philip K. Dick. I have not read a book of his and maybe it’s time. (more…)

It turns out, I really am a fan

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

So I bought Php 2,279-worth of books from Fully Booked, so that I can get a sign-up pass for that Neil Gaiman event on March 18. I still think that the one-time, minimum 2,000-pesos, single-receipt purchase of Neil Gaiman books is still too much. I thought I won’t participate in anything as commercialized like that, but I guess having missed all the Neil Gaiman events in the past.

I think I am actually doing Neil (like close?) a favor. I am sure that most people there are spoiled rich kids who are not real fans, a bunch of people who just participated because they can just tell people that they were there. I deserve to be there; hence, I am broke. So, I decided that I should spend some money on comic books. I have most of his books already, darn! At least Fully Booked is stocked with a selection of items I still don’t have.

I decided to buy The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch, The Books of Magic and Odd and the Frost Giants (which I gave Meow in celebration of our 23rd month-sary).

The drawback of technology

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Because we do not own a router, I have to wait in queue for my turn to use the internet while my bratty sister was in her typical cranky self. Storming to my room, I decided to continue reading TH White’s Once and Future King, left unfinished for a week or so.

Bad-tempered at first, I then got lost in the world of fantasy and enjoyed reading about Merlyn’s wisdom, Queen Morgause of Lothian and her other enchanted sisters, of the Old Ones and the early years of Arthur’s rule.

Farewell to Mr. Salinger

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

JD Salinger is dead at age 91 on January 27, 2010. He was the writer of “The Catcher in the Rye,” a cult favorite of sorts that I have mixed feelings about.

I once took a Facebook quiz on which literary character you are, it came out with Holden Caulfield. Nak ng –!I am not like Holden Caulfield. It killed me. Do I strike you to be the type of guy who complains a lot, and has all this angst against the world? I am not like that! Do you see me complaining that way?!

Okay.

I read The Catcherwhen, I think, I was in college. I was young but not that young that I have already a good grasp of who I am, which is probably one of the reasons that the book did not hit me as hard as others. I liked Franny and Zooey better.

Reading books on a pleasant weekend

Monday, November 16th, 2009

First day of work. The weekend was too short.

I am glad that I was able to read books again. I think it’s been months since last I was able to read books.

I was able to finish Carl Hiaasen’s Hoot. Funny book. No, it was a hilarious book that had one of the things I like — weird characters. I always enjoy a book with weird (or damaged, either one) characters.

While waiting for Meow last Sunday, I dropped by NBS. Again, di ko napigilan ang aking sarili at napabili ako ng graphic novel ulit. Yung Madame Xanadu: Vol.1 Disenchantment.

Snuff among other things

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I am starting this post at 4:39 a.m., listening to Ours (my current favorite band for quite some time now). I am beginning to have sleeping problems again.

I hate going to work. My shift now starts at 9 a.m., parang normal na tao. I hate waking  early when I am able to sleep. I hate the traffic.

So here I am. I tried to catch on my reading. And so many of the books I have, I still haven’t finished.

Last weekend, I saw Fight Club again. I don’t recall liking it that much when I first saw it (but I did like it). I guess I liked it more because I understood how it is like to be going to work and being there half conscious like a zombie. I am really having problems looking for the book.

From comic books to my weight

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

It was Free Comic Book Day last Saturday at Fully Booked!

I was thinking twice about going there but I cannot help myself. I got  free comic book, not the type that cost much but is fine since it’s free. There is a 20% discount for all graphic novels. I took the opportunity to buy three books. I am now finally able to complete the Sandman series with Preludes and Nocturnes, the first volume that I was able to purchase and read last. Also bought the Dead Boy Detectives and V for Vendetta (I was always planning to buy that but never did due to economic and availability reasons).

The Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes Pictures, Images and Photos

I end up with little money now.

Neil Gaiman’s work for the first volume, I expected less. I was told that the art on it was unimpressive but you know what? I kinda appreciate it. It’s not that bad. And the story was still really good, it is amazing how the first volume really gave clues to the events to follow. It has Dream mistakenly captured (instead of Death) by some thantophobic old man. He was imprisoned and the Dream world collapses. He escapes and he rebuilds his world again.

The wait! The beads! The book!

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I am still waiting for calls. Yes, I am still hopeful of getting something published. Aba! Napagod ako sa pag-proofread ng sinulat ko at lagi pa rin akong nakikitang mali. Kaya nung OK na (or acceptable na), in-email ko na agad. Tingnan natin kung ano mangyayari, this is the first time that I went out of my way to actually work on a project that I hope will pay off. But I dunno, maybe it really is mediocre. But then again, so does many stories published out there!

I should not expect too much. I always get disappointed.

I still feel tired and hardly slept last night. Stupid shift changes…

I told myself that I will spend less but I am still weak. I can’t help myself.

We were in the bookstore, I found this box labeled Rudraksha, I was wondering what’s in it. It was heavy, if you shake it, I can hear chimes. It was on sale and 90% was slashed from its original Php 1,000+++. Being the impulsive consumer that I am, despite my tight budget, I bought it.

Stories coming out of my mind

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

In my mind there was a bird of seven colors, whose feathers gleamed as brilliant as precious metals and brilliant stones. It has long feathers, light and soft. It spreads its three long pairs of wings and it flew out of my mind.

Past my head, out of my brain, past the metal wall of the FX taxi, up to the sky and it is only I that see it.

I

Naisipan ko magpakalbo ulit. Sabi nila bagay. Mula nang magsara yung dati kong barber, iniiwasan ko magpagupit. Dapat kasi sa akin ay low-maintenance kasi tamad ako mag-ayos ng buhok. So goodbye bad hair days, goodbye hair!

I have this weird superstition. Minamalas ako for the rest of the month pagkatapos ko magpakalbo. I have expelled much of my superstitious beliefs when I was in college but was revived again due to a bunch of coincidentally unfortunate events.

That’s why nagpakalbo ako ng 31st, inisip ko if kalbo ako 9 hours before the month’s end, there will be less probability of getting major bad luck compared sa pagpapakalbo sometime in the middle or the beginning of the month. Sabi ko nga weird superstition.
