Piling up the books

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Nanggaling kami ng Robinson’s Galleria ng kapatid ko, I ended up buying 4 more books. Sale kasi.

The problem with me is I have too much books but I don’t have a space to stock them up. I end putting them in a big plastic box, takot ako sa paper kasi baka anayin. As of this writing, my catalogued books at librarything is 131. (more…)

I am struggling…

to keep it all together

May pasok ulit mamaya. Patience, dayoff na ulit, come Saturday.

I then realized it is not that bad. Anything with people killing themselves while sentimentally thinking of life is always good in my book no matter how predictable it is (I’ve got a good idea already of what the book was about). I don’t know how they made it a movie… we’ll see once it shows.

I can't think of any decent title for this post

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

A lot of people are reading the series by Stephenie Meyer. I have seen The Twilight movie and not really found it very good. They say the book is tons better, I could never be the judge of that because I don’t intend to read the book anytime soon.

I have issues with books the masses love. I guess I want to read a book because I want to read it on my own and not join the bandwagon. And I also don’t like profiteering serialized work that I have no assurance will end (reason why I found respect for JK Rowling for she gave HP a good ending, as my girlfriend raves of the final book), maybe I will check if it ends, don’t want it to be like Robert Jordan’s. Namatay na yung writer, di pa natapos.

I remember when Harry Potter came out. At least I was able to read the first two books before the movie came out. I did not like it that much, it was amusing in a way but not something that I will go out of my way to purchase. My girlfriend told me to read Book 3, that’s when it starts to get appealing for adults. Maybe I will… someday

Dark Materials

Friday, November 28th, 2008

I have seen The Golden Compass a year ago. While it was panned by some critics, I liked it, maybe because it has talking animals in it.

Months later, i decided to read the book. And as me and my girlfriend observed, we enjoyed the movie without really knowing the story. It’s about dust, Original Sin and consciousness.

It was supposed to be a children’s story, I am not sure. Like I wrote once, I hate to explain theology especially to a conservative society. And considering my stand, it is bad enough. If a Christian reads the book, it can easily be branded as heresy.

Spoilers ahead. Of course, I am too lazy to write long with special details.

Anyway the first book in the trilogy by Philip Pullman. Set in a parallel Universe where people have daemons (that we may call spirits), polar bears talk, witches are glamorous Amazons, and magic is as ordinary as Science. The story starts with Lyra, a seemingly ordinary, obnoxious girl who stumbles into a secret. She is given the alethiometer, a device that can tell the truth. She is adopted by Mrs. Coulter, a charmingly beautiful woman but in reality is deceitful and power-hungry.

We later learn that Lyra’s uncle is her father and the evil Mrs. Coulter is her mother. Her father by the way wants to defy The Authority (the one who calls himself God). Lyra is prophesied as the New Eve who will change the world.

So eto na!

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

I have been doing some reading lately. I was able to finish The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman (way better than the movie) and I realized na pinanuod ko yung movie nang di man lang naiintindihan yung istorya.

The last book I read is Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of Dog in the Night-time. (Link here) It is a book that Grace loved and two other online chums are raving about.

It follows the story of Christopher Boone, a highly logical fifteen-year-old autistic boy. Strangely enough, I can relate to the guy (but not that much). It is a nicely written book. It is a detective story of how Christopher wanted to know who killed their neighbor’s dog. I was able to know who killed the dog early but what follows is a story of how an innocent kid is surrounded by a messed up surrounding that we as normal people are very familiar of. It is heartbreaking at times but you really can’t blame the guy. And by the way, Christopher’s way of explaining things made a lot of sense.

And that would be last of those kinds of books that I will be reading for a while.

I have been visited by bouts of loneliness, it passes by and it is something that I get over with. I swear from now on, I will not let it stand in the way of what i want.

Last Friday, I went to Medical City to see a doctor. But unfortunately, I got pissed off by my company’s current HMO and to make myself happy, I ended up spending 900 pesos eating sushi with Grace (we had a date in the hospital). Oh yes, I love Japanese food. Gusto ko pag-aralan gumamit ng chopstick! And I tried eating using chopsticks and I ended up gobbling a sushi with one bite. Makes me look like some uncultured mountain tribesman. Ooops! Taga-bundok nga pala talaga ako.

I bought this really nice book about pastel painting and I think it’s my next project. Making art using pastels.

Out on Paper

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Hi! I haven’t been doing any updates and to clarify on my previous post, the domain would still be the same. However, I will be transferring hosts next month but I don’t know when yet. I will do that once my mapping expires here and I have time to work on it.

But worry not! I will be here. Blogging is a lifestyle that I am not yet prepared to give up. I now realize that I like writing regardless if no one reads my posts. My first 5 months as a blogger nobody reads my posts, I write because I want to have something out there, an outlet for my ideas. And this, I do today.

I have been writing a lot in paper. I have been sending postcards through postcrossing. And I am happy so far. I have received postcards, I really like the ones from Finland. They have stamps that apparently have Braille on it. Cool.  The dorky stamp collector from High School is back.

Middlesex

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

I have finally finished reading Middlesex. I bought it last January just because I want to read smarter books. I have been reading nothing but Fantasy lately. Being a Pulitzer winner and all it might be a good read (plus mura lang ang bili ko, mga Php 180). It also received a lot of critical acclaim. So let me give it a try.

I have read Virgin Suicides a year ago and I felt like reading something more from Eugenides (I liked Virgin Suicides the book more than the movie).

Narrated in the first person by a girl named Calliope Stephanides, really smart and a great storyteller. And you might jump into the conclusion that it is about  a transvestite or transsexual. It isn’t.

It’s about her/him having 5-alpha-reductase deficiency a rare disease which has something to do with chromosomes (di ko na i-e-explain, nosebleed ako). Calliope (female) also called Callie will grow up to be Cal (male). She will retrace her history starting from her grandparents who happen to be brother and sister (and my friends say it’s gross, it kinda is) and how their child marries his cousin and ultimately bears Callie later Cal.

Reading again

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I have been posting stupid stuff the past weeks so I think I should post something now that may not be smart but at least make me look less of a troglodyte.

After my Mom tuned into the evening news, I normally decide to just read in my room (I am gonna see all the Lozada stuff in the newspapers tomorrow, I don’t feel like seeing anything political). So I am catching again on my reading and today I was able to finally finish two! I have a lot of unfinished ones there.

Something with my books

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Because of my current employment status, I have a lot of free time today (which I devote a lot to sleeping over outside and drinking), so I tried sorting the things piled up in the bedroom. And I need to do something to do with my books, I have 3 boxes and a backpack full of books. If I had a job, I may have considered buying a nice shelf but unfortunately, that wouldn’t work with me. Busabos ako at walang trabaho.

I also saw some receipts that I have from last year, I was bored, I decided to add them up. My expenses for fastfood is a lot, so after reaching 3,000, I gave up.

Now, with fewer receipts for books, it would be easier to tally them up. I have told myself I have no time to read books but am I surprised that in 2007, the receipts summed up to a staggering (I mean staggering like stabbed-in-the-back, crawling-in-the-desert, thirsty-and-hungry, in-the-brink-of-life-and-death staggering - forgive me, for being unemployed) 14,862 pesos. That’s a lot of money to spend for books alone lalo pa’t ako’y naghihikahos sa buhay ngayon and it’s all Neil Gaiman’s fault, he is addictive and his graphic novels are so damn expensive. (more…)

New year Post

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

Happy New Year sa Inyo.

This year balak ko paunlarin ang sarili ko kasi the past year, parang naging milestones lang ng buhay ko ay (a) learning I can drink 12 hours straight; (b) Half-sex; (c) weird sex; and (d) Getting really drunk and not knowing what happened in between waking up. Naging patapon pala ang buhay ko ng 2007. So this year, I will try to go online more often and do the things that I have been doing before like… wala pala akong ginagawa masyado dati, I take that back. This year I intend to resign from work.  Find myself (pag nakita nyo, sabihin nyo sa akin agad) and probably write more (I used to write mediocre poems and sell essays to classmates when I was in college).
